I guess one really can't assume anything.
As one of my studens observed (or copied
from somewhere), if Alfy's name weren't
in the title, he would be anonymous.
Perhaps he is anonymous. For all we know,
J.A.P. could be a fictional poet who is
neither "you" nor "I". Despite what Eliot
might have allowed to the contrary. Perhaps
J.A.P. was a distracted businessman like
Perhaps the poem is satire on poesie.
All kinds of possibilities suggest themselves.
