While most wars are pretty outrageous in one way or another, that war
was one of the stupidest ever fought.

My sediments exactly. It is, perhaps (to be Eliotonian),
understandable why T.E.lawrence and his herd of ilk were
so disillusioned with the failures after the war to
renew things, and why they, to Eliot's chagrin, saw
TWL as defining the ethos of the time.
