>
>International Theatre Conference
>Directing and Authorship in Western Drama
>October 24-26, 2003
> Acadia University
>
>This conference will bring together scholars and practitioners from various
>parts of the world to explore the subject of directing and authorship in
>Western drama. The conference will address the aesthetic, intellectual,
>theoretical and legal implications of directing in relation to the author
>and the literary text, asking:
>
>* What is the obligation of the director to the author of the play?
>* Is the director an interpreter, a co-author or a creator?
>* To what extent is the meaning of a play encoded in the literary
>text?
>* By what process does the director ascertain the intentions of the
>writer?
>* What is the relationship between dramatic intent and directorial
>concept?
>* By what criteria is the director's contribution in a production
>assessed?
>* Who are author and proprietor of a theatrical performance?
>
>These and other related questions will be addressed by considering a range
>of provocative views in the form of research papers, panel discussions and
>practitioner forums. Since this subject crosses disciplines and boundaries,
>the conference will provide opportunities for both formal and informal
>dialogue among academics and professionals from theatre and related fields.
>Individual critical submissions should include a titled abstract, complete
>contact information and institutional affiliation of the participant, and a
>short biographical note (as it will appear in the program). Panel proposals
>should include a session title, the name of the contact person for the
>session, contact information and biography of each presenter in the session,
>and abstracts of each paper or presentation. Submissions by graduate
