What in the world is the reference of "poplar or poindester"? Are you
referring to the Reagan aide of that name? And what has he to do with
popularity (if that is what you mean by the adjective "poplar" without a
noun to modify)? And who spoke of "pointy-heads"? And the syntax of the
last question is opaque. Are you speaking of McCarthy's habit of damning
others or are you damning those who damned McCarthy? I'm all for
informality on e-lists, but it need not extend to sheer illiteracy.
Except for the mention of Gould I would not have intervened, but i hate
to see such a fine writer as Gould damned by association with this
