We would need to keep in mind that Samson Agonistes is a closet drama (one
made not to be produced) and that Milton was, indeed, writing SA in order to
destroy tragedy. One could argue this was done with moderate success, as the
Restoration gives us nothing comparable with Lear or Dr. Faustus.
Uncle Milty was, of course, also writing the play to "kill the father"
But enough Freudian Mumbo Jumbo. I'll have to read Eliot's Sweeny again to
see how it works with Milton.
