For many centuries the Islamic lands were models of religious toleration
-- one might almost say that Islam 'invented' religious toleration.
Christianity and Judaism were regarded as, along with Islam as
"religions of the book" (for the Hebrew bible and the Christian
Testament were also regarded as dictated by God.
One thing the Arabs had to teach in addition to algebra was keeping
clean -- they loved water and bathing. After the reconquest of Spain
godly dirtiness once again came to reign there. Isabella (she of
Colombine fame) boasted that she had only two baths in her life: the day
she was born and the day she was married. Several years ago there was an
