First, I'm not saying there is a connection and, as I remember,
even J.P. put in a reservation. But the way I see the possible
connection is: branch of lilac - spray of lavender
I am willing to admit that my own retrospect is touched by a
sentimental sunset, the memory of a friend coming across the
Luxembourg Gardens in the late afternoon, waving a branch of
lilac, a friend who was later (so far as I could find out) to
be mixed with the mud of Gallipoli.
Now, back to the roses if I may. I was famliar with the history
but unsure of the symbolism. Both Nancy and Robert gave me clues.
Would you say that at a first attempt to understand 4Q I should
consider the Royal Rose as a symbol of unity? That is to say that
it is neither the white rose of York nor the red rose of Lancaster
but a rose for the united houses? Or perhaps as a symbol of the
passing of time as a new dynasty takes over?
