It's really not that shocking, not if you have studied the "man" at all.
I've read too numerous to name articles about Wallace Stevens. Peter
Brazeau's book, Parts of a World: Wallace Stevens Remembered, is probably the
best portrait to date of Stevens as a man. Brazeau delves into Stevens'
coldness and his attitude towards other contemporary American writers.
Understand though, that Brazeau's work is hardly the ultimate biography. I
don't think anyone is able to write a true biography of Stevens, as so much
of his life remains clouded in mystery; and, as the years since his death
continue to pass by without much progress being made in infiltrating his
double life, the chances of it happening at all by anyone are, I believe,
becoming extremely slim.
