Stevens, although an enigmatic figure to this day, like many great writers,
had a fragile ego. Despite the critical acclaim of his work (even then, some
proclaimed him to be the greatest poet that ever lived), he felt threatened
by other modernist American poets. The explanation I gave for his faint
praise of Moore is not just my opinion; but from my research and study of
him, I believe it to be true.
