Dateline Southern Florida (the only tropical zone in the continental U.S.)
It's raining. In summer, it rains practically every day here for an hour or
so (late afternoon), and with it, we're treated to an exceptional light show.
The lightning is startingly vertical, sky to ground; it's beautiful; it's
deadly. More people are hit by lightning in Florida than all of the other
states combined. I used to be afraid of it. My dog still is. She runs to
the bathroom and crushes herself against the bathtub. She's a smart doggie.
The weather experts, a major political party in this region, warns us
continually that in a bad storm or a hurricane to go to the bathroom and
stand in the bathtub. I wonder if she heard their broadcasts or just acts on
instinct.
I used to miss Boston. I used to miss walking from BU to Joe's Bar and
Grill. I used to miss walking from BU to Fenway. My sister-in-law said on
the phone last week that if she heard or read another word about Nomar's
injuries, Pedro's injuries or the Governor's twins that she was gonna scream.
I was not aware that the Governor of MA had twins. I, of course, did know
about Nomar and Pedro's injuries.
