Also, if literature has any impact on some of the 'leading thinkers' of a
society, and if those 'leading thinkers' do indeed lead the thinking in a
society, then literature might lead a whole society, whether or not every
single individual has read a word of it. It's influence pervades society as
a whole.

This stikes me as simple, brilliant and true. But a counterpoint comes
to
mind: is "literature" a part of life for those who do not read it?
Which
in turn raises a narrower question: does literature play any part in the
life of illiterate people? More specifically (to carve out communities
with a rich oral tradition), what role, if any, does literature play in
the
lives of illiterate persons in socities where the large majority of
persons
are literate?
Is anyone aware of works considering this subject? Any thoughts on the
subject?
Some of those illiterates do see the movie versions, and though there's a
lot
lost in this kind of translation, not everything is lost. In fact, there
a
lot gained, as many people who would not even consider reading this kind
of
written material do go to see or rent the cinematic interpretations, i.e.,
Streetcar Named Desire, Hamlet, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil,
"The
Fisher King" etc.
