I wonder, then, when the word originated and whether it was then seen as a
building block. I'll have to check the OED, but it does not seem likely to
me. I think most words start as names of things. How about "sky"?

Perhaps. First you have a rock and then you do something with it and it
gets turned into a stone (building stone, grave stove, paving stone, etc.)
In a context like this "stone" could mean transform from a more primitive
form.
