Well, I can agree with what you are saying here, although I think =
"thoughtless remarks" are properly considered in an analysis like the =
one Julius was undertaking. Also, I don't believe Eliot's comment was =
thoughtless, but rather reflected a good deal of deliberation.=20
I was responding not to your story, but to your perception that I was =
endorsing the passages Julius was commenting on.
BTW, in the interests of fair disclosure and for general purposes going =
forward, I should let the list know: I'm changing over email account =
from [log in to unmask] to [log in to unmask] I realize that I =
inadvertently defended my comments under the old handle through my new =
account, perhaps creating the impression that I had third-party support. =
I'll be posting from both accounts until I cancel the AOL account.

You have an admirable moral instinct, but an undisciplined mind. =
It is=20
Julius who is quoting these things, as evidence of Eliot's =
anti-Semitism. =20
The question is whether or not the passages he cites, read =
together in the=20
context of his arguments, support his thesis. If this sort of =
discussion=20
offends you, you either do not understand it, or are irrational. =
Sir:=20
Methinks you are the irrational one. I simply told a story that came =
to mind=20
relating to the idea that a person of a minority group cannot write as =
a=20
general citizen of his society. As to whether Eliot was anti-Semitic, =
I=20
don't think his statement about Rosenberg, whether taken to be a =
derogatory=20
or complimentary, will answer this question, as often a person without =
any=20
real prejudice in his being may make a thoughtless remark or tell a =
tasteless=20
joke about a certain ethnic group.=20
