Call for Papers for an Edited Volume: Shelter from the Storm? German Jews and Asians in the Shadow of the Holocaust, 1930-1950

Between 1933 and 1939, and especially after Kristallnacht in 1938, tens of thousands of German-speaking Jews emigrated to Western Europe, Palestine, and North America. Since most Western countries would not raise quotas for immigrants, thousands more had to look elsewhere to escape persecution. One area Jewish refugees found was Asia. Already in the 1920s, thousands of East European Jews, looking to escape the Bolshevik Revolution, fled to East Asia, Manchuria, and Shanghai in particular. After Kristallnacht, many German and Austrian Jews sought to emigrate to Asia as well. The Third Reich did not initially prevent this emigration and in some respects sponsored it, supported by Chinese and Japanese authorities. Only in 1941, with the first mass killings of Jews on the Eastern Front, did Nazi policy start to diverge significantly from that of the Asian powers, raising additional questions about the role of anti-Semitism in Japan, China, and other Asian States. While there exist some important studies of policies toward and experiences of German-speaking Jews in China and to a lesser extent Japan, the Philippines, and India, there are no comprehensive, transnational analyses of this important episode in German-Jewish and Holocaust history, whether at the level of policy or sociocultural encounters between Germans, Jews and Asians. This editors of this volume intend to fill that gap.

Some possible topics include, but are not limited to:

•	Experiences of German-speaking Jews in various Asian countries
•	Encounters between German-speaking Jews and Asians
•	Relationship between German Jews and Non-German Jews in Asia
•	Policies of the Nazi government toward German-Speaking Jews in Asia
•	Policies of Asian governments toward German-Speaking Jews in Asia
•	German-speaking Jews and Asians after 1945 and Legacies

A possible venue to explore these topics is at a panel on “German Jews and Asians in the Shadow of the Holocaust” and the Asian German Studies Seminar at the German Studies Association’s (GSA) annual conference in Portland, Oregon, October 3-6, 2019. Proposals are due January 26, 2019 for both the panel and the three-day seminar (https://networks.h-net.org/node/73374/announcements/3464116/asian-german-studies-seminar-german-studies-association-gsa). Conference web site: https://www.thegsa.org/conference/current-conference. Participation in the conference is not required to contribute to the volume.

For consideration for this volume, submit an abstract of 500 words and a CV to the co-editors for first consideration, by 1 March 2019.
